Job Summary:
The Psychiatrist will provide psychiatric, diagnostic, and therapeutic service in a mental health clinic and/or inpatient psychiatric facility.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- None.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Conducts psychiatric examinations.
- Makes diagnoses and prescribes therapy.
- Administers and interprets projective tests.
- Conducts individual and group psychotherapy.
- Participates in staff conferences and recommends appropriate treatment approaches.
- Assists in developing and organizing a program of clinic treatment.
- Directs case conferences. Serves as a consultant to other clinic staff.
- Confers with patients relatives regarding illness and treatment.
- Assists through consultation in establishing psychiatric programs and policies.
- Keeps medical records and prepares psychiatric reports.
- Testifies in judicial proceedings on matters concerning petitions and affidavits.
- Completes other duties as assigned.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Knowledge of general medicine and psychiatry; current developments in the field of psychiatry; hospital and clinic organization, management, and procedures.
- Ability to skillfully diagnose and treat severely and persistently mentally ill patients.
- Ability to analyze situations and adopt an effective course of action.
- Ability to prepare records and reports.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
- Ability to maintain objectivity and confidentiality.
Education and Experience:
- Completion of a residency training program in psychiatry and two years of post-residency experience as a psychiatrist in a psychiatric facility required.
- Possession of a valid license as a physician and surgeon required.
- Initial acceptance may be based on licensure as a physician and surgeon in another state; licensure as a physician and surgeon in this state is required prior to appointment.
- Possession of a valid state drivers license may be required.
Physical Requirements:
- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- May require periods of standing, bending or reaching.
- Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
