Sanitarian Inspector




Job Summary:

The Sanitarian Inspector will inspect establishments for conformance to public health regulations and codes. The Sanitarian Inspector will identify hazards and examine conditions as they affect public health in such areas as milk and food control, institutional sanitation and safety, hazardous materials, solid waste handling and disposal practice, vector control, lead poisoning, and environmental health.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • None.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Conducts inspections, checking sanitary conditions, equipment, and operating procedures at grocery stores, dairy plants, restaurants, health care facilities, schools, and other sites as determined by the city health code.
  • Checks the food handling practices of vendors at special events.
  • Participates with state and federal inspectors in food and drug recalls.
  • Sets up mosquito light traps and identifies species of mosquitos collected.
  • Investigates bites by dogs and other animals and obtains specimens for rabies testing.
  • Conducts inspections, checking for vector problems in buildings to be demolished or excavated or in response to tenant or neighborhood complaints.
  • Maintains files on positive lead cases and arranges with parents and medical facilities for treatment.
  • Conducts home inspections, recommends cases for abatement, and reviews completed work.
  • Periodically inspects paint stores for presence of lead paint.
  • Prepares written reports of code violations, issues warnings and reports; may appear in court on behalf of city in noncompliance cases.

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Knowledge of regulations, principles, and techniques relating to environmental and public health.
  • Knowledge of laboratory practice related to the analysis of testing of milk and other food products.
  • Excellent verbal and written skills to communicate effectively and to prepare clear and concise reports.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree with major course work in environmental, agricultural, life or physical science, dairy or food technology, or a combined major in these subjects.

Physical Requirements:

  • Physical ability to make physical inspections under a variety of, often adverse, environmental conditions.
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • May require long periods of standing, reaching, and bending.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds at times.
