Bioinformatics Technician




Job Summary:

The Bioinformatics Technician will use sophisticated measurement tools and programs to gather, analyze, and record biological characteristic data, and then to interpret, visualize, and/or manipulate the data for further study.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • None.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Collects and documents large amounts of scientific data.
  • Analyzes collected data using statistics, computer programs, and other sophisticated tools; makes assessments and predictions based on observations.
  • Tracks data to identify changes and trends of the subject(s) being studied.
  • Reports findings, in written and oral presentation forms, using appropriate visuals.
  • Assists with preparation of reports for scientific publication.
  • Develops and maintains searchable databases of research and biological data.
  • Collaborates with fellow scientists, clinicians, and information technology staff to ensure that data needs and requirements are met and understood.
  • Creates and maintains user manuals and procedures and provides training on these documents to assist with database use and data management.
  • Performs routine system administrative actions such as upgrades, backups, and troubleshooting.
  • Maintains current knowledge of emerging computational methods and technologies.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Ability to use scientific rules, processes, and methods to solve problems and make predictions.
  • Advanced knowledge of, or ability to quickly learn, the scientific record and statistical analysis programs used by the organization.
  • Superior background in math and science.
  • Ability to collect, document, and analyze large amounts of data.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelors degree in related math or science field required; Masters degree preferred.
  • Three to five years of related experience required.

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
