SHRM Research Informs Global Workplace Culture Model

Employees who rate their organization’s culture as ‘good or excellent’ are 790% more likely to feel satisfied at work

ALEXANDRIA, Va.—Today, SHRM released a new research report, "The State of Global Workplace Culture in 2023."  Despite the political and economic turmoil of 2022 and 2023, workplace culture perceptions remain largely positive: Worldwide, 61% of employees say the culture at their organization is “good or excellent,” while fewer than 1 in 10 describe it as “poor or terrible.”

Workplace culture remains vital for organizational success: Regardless of the country where they live, employees who rate their workplace culture highly are both more satisfied at work and more committed to their organization. Employees who rate their organization’s culture as good or excellent (vs. poor or terrible) are:

  • 790% more likely to feel satisfied at work.
  • 96% less likely to dread going to work.
  • 83% less likely to be actively looking for a new job at present.
  • 78% less likely to have actively looked for a new job in the last six months.

“The results of this study underscore the universal importance of workplace culture, transcending geographical boundaries,” said Alex Alonso, Ph.D., SHRM-SCP, chief knowledge officer, SHRM. “Employees around the world who work for organizations with a positive culture are not only more satisfied at work but are substantially more committed to their organization, both of which are fundamental pillars of organizational success.”

SHRM Research found that five key dimensions influence employees’ workplace culture perceptions, regardless of the country where they work. These dimensions are summarized in SHRM’s Global Workplace Culture Model. Organizations around the world can address the five dimensions to enhance employees’ perceptions of a positive workplace culture:

- Equitable Leadership Practices

  • When equity is high, employees are 19 times more likely to rate their culture as good or excellent.

- Career Fulfillment

  • When career fulfillment is high, employees are 12 times more likely to rate their culture as good or excellent.

- Good Manager Communication

  • When manager communication is good, employees are 7 times more likely to rate their culture as good or excellent.

- Work/Life Integration

  • When work/life integration is high, employees are 10 times more likely to rate their culture as good or excellent.

- Respectful Workplace Interactions

  • When respectful interactions are high, employees are 11 times more likely to rate their culture as good or excellent.

Methodology

A sample of 11,080 participants from 15 countries was recruited using a third-party online panel between December 2022 and April 2023. Participants were equally balanced by gender and ranged across all age groups and generations. The participants worked for organizations of all sizes and ranged in tenure with the organization from less than one year to more than 10 years. Most participants were either individual contributors or front-line managers, but a small number of high-level executives also took part.
