West Virginia SHRM Elevates the Voice of HR at State Capitol

“The sun doesn’t always shine in West Virginia, but the people do.” — President John F. Kennedy
On Feb. 20, members of the West Virginia SHRM state council (WV SHRM) came together at the state Capitol in Charleston, shining just as brightly as the Capitol’s iconic golden dome. Despite the snowy weather, HR professionals from across the Mountain State turned out in force, demonstrating their dedication to our profession and its impact on the workforce.
Throughout the day, we explored the historic and stunning Capitol building, engaged with our local Senate representatives, and proudly witnessed the unanimous passage of our proposed resolution. As a result, the West Virginia Senate officially declared Feb. 20, 2025, as HR Day in the state! This recognition is a testament to the hard work and dedication of HR professionals who often serve behind the scenes, ensuring businesses and employees thrive.
Beyond the resolution, our presence made a lasting impression. Many legislators expressed their need for HR expertise on upcoming bills, reinforcing the critical role we play in shaping effective workplace policies.
As HR professionals, we advocate for smart, practical policies that strengthen our workforce and economy — without getting caught up in politics. WV SHRM stands ready to be that trusted resource, offering insight and advocacy to support legislation that benefits both employers and employees.
Active involvement in local government is essential for business success, and this event was a powerful step toward strengthening our influence. By elevating the voice of HR, we remain committed to policy, not politics, ensuring workplaces across West Virginia have the support they need to succeed. We look forward to continuing our work, growing our impact, and making sure HR professionals have a seat at the table.
