New York Advocacy Day SHRM Team
HR Professionals Lead the Way at SHRM’s 2025 New York State Advocacy Day

On Feb. 25, HR professionals from across New York gathered at the state Capitol in Albany for SHRM’s 2025 New York State Advocacy Day, a pivotal event dedicated to advancing workplace policies that support employees and employers alike. With a focus on artificial intelligence regulation, noncompete agreements, and expanding access to untapped talent pools, SHRM members met with legislators, key staff, and policymakers to ensure that HR’s voice plays a central role in shaping the future of work in New York.

Championing Workforce Solutions: SHRM Member Advocates for Student Loan Tax Incentives in California

On March 17, Patricia Leyva, SHRM volunteer leader and senior human resources manager at the Native American Health Center in Oakland, Calif., testified on behalf of SHRM and the SHRM California State Council in support of California Assembly Bill 386. This legislation would provide a tax incentive for businesses that contribute to their employees’ student loan payments, offering a voluntary dollar-for-dollar tax credit of up to $3,000 per full-time employee annually.

On March 25, SHRM was represented by Paige Boughan, M.S., SHRM-SCP, legislative director for the Maryland SHRM State Council, at a hearing held by the House Subcommittee on Workforce Protections (part of House Committee on Education and the Workforce). The hearing, titled “The Future of Wage Laws: Assessing the FLSA’s Effectiveness, Challenges, and Opportunities,” focused on modernizing the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) to better address the needs of today’s workforce.

On April 2, nearly 20 SHRM members from Georgia participated in their annual Day Inside the Beltway Advocacy Experience, meeting directly with policymakers to discuss key workplace challenges and policy solutions. This premier advocacy event allowed SHRM members to elevate the HR profession’s voice on critical workforce issues with their representatives and senators in Congress.

On April 23, SHRM and SHRM California hosted their 2025 California Advocacy Day in Sacramento, bringing together nearly 100 HR professionals from across the state for a full afternoon of direct engagement with state lawmakers and staff. Held in conjunction with the California State HR Advocacy & Legislative Conference, this annual event empowers SHRM members to share their real-world experience and influence public policy affecting California’s workplaces.
