Earn PDCs as a SHRM Exam-Development Volunteer

Write and review SHRM certification exam questions. Benefit the HR community and yourself!

U.S. and international HR subject matter experts gathered at the HumRRO offices in Alexandria, Va., in October 2019 for a two-day workshop to write test items for the SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP certification exams.

The SHRM Exam Development Team is actively seeking SHRM-certified professionals to volunteer as subject matter experts (SMEs) in a wide variety of activities relating to the development of the SHRM certification examinations. SHRM conducts about 30 projects throughout the year, ranging from in-person item-writing workshops to virtual reviews of questions for cultural bias and sensitivity. Our goal is to build world-class content for future SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP exams.

You might ask, "What's in it for me?" Our activities not only provide excellent opportunities for SHRM credential-holders to network with HR experts from across the globe, but they also qualify for professional development credits (PDCs) toward SHRM recertification. You will earn credits for each project you complete and can earn the full 30-PDC allotment of credits in the Advance Your Profession category within your three-year recertification cycle. There is no cost to participate.

Our team takes pride having a diverse group of participating SMEs from across the globe. SHRM exam development is a great way for HR professionals of different backgrounds, nationalities, industries, levels of education, and work experience to give back to the HR community and help make our program the best it can be.

Whether you are in a new position or have worked at the same organization for 20-plus years, we would like you to join us. Your efforts to help develop future HR exams will also help develop the future generation of HR professionals. Through their performance on the test, new candidates for SHRM certification will be able to demonstrate their HR knowledge and competencies—just as you've done, and continue to do, every day on the job.

The Exam-Development Volunteer Activities page on the SHRM website features detailed descriptions of each project, the requirements and benefits of participating in the program, and a self-assessment survey for first-time volunteers. Complete and submit the survey to find out if you meet our qualifications. If selected, we will contact you via e-mail with a project schedule, so that you can become part of the team and start earning PDCs. You are also welcome to contact me directly at Charles.Glover@SHRM.org for more information.

We hope to hear from you soon and look forward to working with you.

Charles Glover, M.S., is SHRM's exam development specialist.
