Recruiting: Workers with Disabilities: Where can employers find qualified applicants with disabilities?

An employer can find qualified applicants with disabilities at the following employment service providers:

  • Ask The Employer Assistance and Resource Network (EARN) is a resource for employers seeking to recruit, hire and retain qualified employees with disabilities.
  • State vocational rehabilitation agencies, providing counseling, evaluation and job placement services for people with disabilities.
  • Workforce Recruitment Program, connecting federal and private-sector employers with college students and recent college graduates with disabilities.​ 

Ways to recruit workers with disabilities include:

  • Posting open positions at job service and workforce employment centers.
  • Contacting college and university career centers.
  • Partnering with disability-related advocacy organizations.
  • Including people with disabilities in diversity recruitment goals.
  • Posting open positions or hosting tables/booths at disability-related job fairs.
  • Establishing summer internship and mentoring programs.
  • Posting open positions at independent living centers.

  • The Recruitment and Retention section of the Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP) website contains comprehensive information for employers about recruiting and hiring qualified applicants with disabilities.
  • The Job Accommodation Network (JAN) is dedicated to helping employers integrate or retain people with disabilities. It is a leading source of free, expert and confidential guidance on workplace accommodations and disability employment issues.
  • Disability Employment Tabulation, from the U.S. Census Bureau, shows disability status and labor force diversity for 4,000 local U.S. areas and information on the skills and availability of people with disabilities, including details on occupation, education and earnings.
  • SHRM's Disability Employment Resource Page offers news, articles and guides to help employers understand the latest trends and best practices relating to employment of people with disabilities.
