Juvenile Probation Officer




Job Summary:

The Juvenile Probation Officer will oversee youth who are on probation or parole, ensuring adolescents and their families comply with court terms and orders.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • None.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Meets with the juvenile and family to assess the situation and understand relevant aspects of the family and social history.
  • Regularly visits juveniles home to ensure compliance with terms and orders set by court.
  • Counsels juveniles, offering guidance on changing or eliminating behavioral issues.
  • Based on juveniles compliance and progress, provides presiding judges with recommendations for alternate sentencing or treatment.
  • Ensures educational matters, medical issues, and court mandates are properly addressed.
  • Provides regular, detailed, and accurate reports to the court.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational and critical-thinking skills.
  • Ability to stay calm in difficult and emotional situations and to counsel troubled youth and their families.
  • Understanding of laws and regulations pertaining to the custody, welfare, protection, and detention of juvenile offenders.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite or related software.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelors degree in Criminal Justice, Social Work, Behavioral Sciences, or related field required; Masters degree preferred.
  • Experience working with troubled adolescents preferred.
  • Valid drivers license.

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
