SHRM Official Honors Congressional Excellence at Democracy Awards
SHRM Chief Data & Analytics Officer Alex Alonso, Ph.D., SHRM-SCP, helped kick off the Congressional Management Foundation’s (CMF’s) 2025 Democracy Awards, underscoring SHRM’s commitment to advancing operational excellence and public service in government workplaces.
On Aug. 20, the CMF announced the winners of its annual Democracy Awards, a nonpartisan program recognizing the best in congressional nonlegislative achievement. These awards celebrate members of Congress and their staff who exemplify outstanding public service, operational excellence, and innovative practices that strengthen our democracy. Each category honors one Republican and one Democratic congressional office, while the Chief of Staff of the Year award recognizes four leaders: one from each party in both the House and Senate.
On Sept. 4, Alonso attended the Democracy Awards Winners’ Luncheon, an exclusive opportunity to engage directly with this year’s winning congressional offices. This event provided a unique platform for SHRM to connect with congressional leaders who are setting new standards for excellence in public service and management.
On Sept. 18, at the official 2025 Democracy Awards ceremony, Alonso will present the prestigious Excellence in Congressional Management award to Rep. Richard Hudson, R-N.C., and Rep. Nikki Budzinski, D-Ill. This award recognizes offices that have demonstrated exceptional management skills, leadership, professional staff development, and a supportive workplace culture, setting the standard for congressional office management.
SHRM is a platinum sponsor of the Democracy Awards. In addition, SHRM has partnered with the CMF to literally “write the book” on how to run a Capitol Hill office. The SHRM-edited book Setting Course: A Congressional Management Guide contains core guidance and wisdom on setting up and managing a congressional office and has become required reading for members of Congress and their staff.
