Strengthening HR’s Voice in Illinois Through Policymaker Engagement
The Central Illinois Chapter of SHRM (CIC SHRM) recently hosted its Half-Day Educational Conference, providing HR professionals across the region with an opportunity to engage in meaningful dialogue about the policy issues shaping workplaces throughout Illinois. A highlight of the program was the participation of Illinois State Senator Chris Balkema, who shared valuable insight into the workforce and employer-related legislation currently under consideration in Springfield.
In his session, “Policy in Action: A Legislator’s Perspective on Workforce and Workplace Issues,” Senator Balkema addressed the challenges and opportunities facing Illinois employers—from workforce readiness and education-to-employment pathways to regulatory clarity and talent development. His remarks underscored the importance of open communication between HR professionals and state policymakers to ensure that Illinois workplaces remain strong, competitive, and responsive to the needs of both workers and employers.
CIC SHRM’s leadership in facilitating this engagement demonstrates the essential role SHRM affiliates play in elevating HR’s voice at the state level. When Illinois lawmakers hear directly from HR leaders, they gain practical insight that informs more effective, people-centered policy solutions.
SHRM Government Affairs encourages all Illinois SHRM affiliates to consider inviting their local and state policymakers to participate in chapter events. These engagements strengthen HR’s impact and help shape the future of work across Illinois.
