Deskless workers constitute a large segment of the global workforce and play critical roles in industries such as health care, retail, construction, transportation, and hospitality.
The diverse work settings and schedules that define deskless roles, coupled with limited computer access during the workday, irregular hours, and lack of face-to-face communication, can make it difficult to effectively reach deskless workers. This can create barriers to ensuring that deskless workers are enrolled in and actively participating in their benefits, which could otherwise serve as a strategic tool for addressing broader challenges such as recruitment, engagement, and retention.
Recognizing the vital contributions of these workers, SHRM and Fidelity Investments have collaborated to explore and provide actionable solutions for the unique challenges that HR professionals may face when managing deskless workers.

Lydia Aulisi
Lydia Aulisi, PhD is a researcher within Fidelity’s Strategic Research and Thought Leadership team. She supports the strategy, planning, and execution of employee- and employer-focused strategic research projects, leveraging behavioral science perspectives and methodologies. Lydia received her Ph.D. in Industrial-Organizational Psychology from George Mason University, where her research focused on employee well-being, work-nonwork decision making, and utilization of workplace leave benefits (e.g., vacation, parental leave). She is passionate about applying evidence-based approaches to promote employee well-being, engagement, and organizational health.

Ragan Decker
Ragan Decker, Ph.D., is an Industrial-Organizational Psychologist and Manager of Executive Network and Enterprise Research on SHRM’s Thought Leadership team. She has the privilege of leading a team of researchers who conduct strategic research to support SHRM’s mission as it relates to work, workers, and the workplace. Her team’s research spans a wide range of topics, including deskless workers, artificial intelligence, executive priorities, the state of the workplace, mental health, and civility.
