Book Proposal FAQs
Please note each book published by SHRM requires a fully executed publishing agreement between the author and SHRM. The terms, rights, and obligations provided in any specific agreement supersede any information provided on this or other SHRM websites.
Q: Will writing a book give me preferential treatment when selecting conference/workshop speakers?
No. Authors submit the standard information to the appropriate teams at SHRM and go through the same selection process as other submitters.
Q: Does SHRM publish e-books?
Yes, all new titles are converted into the three main ebook formats: Mobi (Kindle), ePUB, and PDF.
Q: Does SHRM sell books beyond the U.S. market?
Yes, we reach academic and international markets for most of our books through our trade distributor.
Q: Does SHRM co-publish books with other publishers?
SHRM evaluates co-publishing opportunities on a case-by-case basis.
Q: How does SHRM Books decide what to publish?
Criteria for book publishing includes:
- Reflects and advances the SHRM Competency Model and SHRM Body of Applied Skills and Knowledge™ (SHRM BASK™)
- Suitability for SHRM's audience
- Quality, timeliness, and originality of topic and treatment
- Addresses a demonstrable market need
- The author's ability to promote the book
Q: What are the timelines?
It takes at least one month for SHRM to assess a book proposal. The final manuscript is usually due 4-8 months from the date of an executed Publishing Agreement between the author and SHRM. Once the final manuscript is submitted to SHRM, it takes between 4-6 months to edit, design, and publish a book.
