Railroad Conductor




Job Summary:

The Railroad Conductor will coordinate the daily activity of the train and train crew, ensuring the timely operation of the train and the safety of all passengers.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Directs and assists train crew, providing training and demonstration of appropriate methods for connecting and uncoupling cars, operating switches, and making repairs.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Manages and facilitates the safe and efficient operation of the train and crew.
  • Communicates with engineers or other dispatch staff to determine the trains route, timetable, and cargo before departure; reviews alerts and documentation regarding track, equipment, or route difficulties.
  • Reviews cargo loading and unloading documentation to ensure that cargo is loaded and unloaded correctly.
  • Inspects train and equipment prior to departure to ensure that equipment is in safe working condition and is in compliance with regulations and requirements.
  • Communicates with other conductors or stations through radio or telephone.
  • Assists with ticketing, passenger inquiries, and passenger complaints.
  • Maintains passenger and crew compliance with orders, signals, rules, and regulations.
  • Maintains vigilant observation of train, cargo areas, and station, reporting any suspicious activities and taking appropriate actions.
  • Ensures the safety of bystanders and passengers.
  • Intervenes when passengers violate rules or act in a disruptive or inappropriate way.
  • Assists Locomotive Engineer with operation of locomotive equipment.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Skills/Abilities:

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Successful completion of a six-week training program or equivalent required.
  • Current drivers license required.
  • Three years of related work experience required.

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods of standing and traversing railroad cars and tracks.
  • Must be able to visually inspect locomotive vehicles in all types of weather.
  • Must be able to lift, push, pull, climb, sit, and stand.
  • Must be able to identify and distinguish colors and hear warning signals.
  • Must be able to walk up to a mile on rough terrain.
  • Must be able to lift up to 75 pounds at a time.
