How can HR pros ensure dress code policies are equitable and culturally sensitive? What’s the best way to address violations? Is it okay for different departments to create their own guidelines? Honest HR’s newest host Nicole Belyna, SHRM’s director of talent, and Deron Lehman, CHRO of Barber National Institute, discuss strategies and best practices for how organizations can balance the need for professionalism in business attire with employee comfort and individuality.
CHRO, Barber National Institute
Deron Lehman has served as Chief Human Resources Officer at Barber National Institute in Erie, Pennsylvania, since March 2024. With over 25 years of experience in research institutions, non-profits, and government, he specializes in strategy, strengthening teams, and optimizing operations to improve services. He has volunteered on the DC SHRM Board of Directors and with the HR Virginia State Council. Deron holds a SHRM-SCP certification, a bachelor's degree from Bloomsburg University, and an MBA from Robert Morris University.
Through his leadership and consulting, he has enhanced employee experience, strengthened HR’s impact on business outcomes, and improved alignment with organizational culture and mission. Internally he has also focused on creating clarity around creating learning environments where employees can take risks, learn from mistakes, and flourish through learned skills. He also supports the growth of HR professionals and business leaders by facilitating training sessions and speaking at local and national events.
Outside the office, Deron enjoys being active with the preference for being outside. You could often find him trail running, biking, and hiking. Most of his best thinking is done while he’s out in nature. He also enjoys cooking and experimenting with recipes to create the best food experiences for his friends.
