In recent years, the sudden emergence of new AI tools kicked off a transformation in the world of work and raised the specter of job displacement risk via automation. These concerns have been concentrated in certain fields, with HR being viewed by some as facing elevated risk. Based on the analyses conducted as part of SHRM’s Automation, Generative AI, and Job Displacement Risk in U.S. Employment, this data brief explores the extent to which HR occupations are currently exposed to task automation and generative AI, as well as the share of HR employment that includes nontechnical barriers to automation displacement. Through this work, we estimate the share of employment in each HR occupation that faces high automation displacement risk.
