Job Summary:

The Cartographer will analyze geographic data and prepare maps and other spatial data for legal, social, political, education, and design purposes.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

• None.

Duties/Responsibilities:

• Interprets data, including data gathered by geodetic surveys, aerial photographs, and satellite, as required to prepare an accurate map.
• Researches and prepares maps and other spatial data for legal, social, political, educational, and design purposes.
• Determines layout of maps and content to be included.
• Sets scale, size, colors, and other specifications; ensures these specifications are followed in production.
• Prepares charts, tables, detailed drawings, and models of terrain using computer graphics equipment.
• Inspects final maps and ensures they are complete and accurate.
• Reviews and updates existing maps.
• Creates and maintains digital databases for geographic information.
• Uses geographic information systems (GIS) and design algorithms, data structures, and user interfaces for GIS and mapping systems.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Skills/Abilities:

• Extensive knowledge of geographic principles and methods for describing features of physical locations.
• Extremely proficient in GIS software and mapping systems.
• Excellent analytical, math, and problem-solving skills.
• Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite or similar software.

Education and Experience:

• Bachelors degree in Cartography, Land Surveying, or similar field required.
• Surveyors license preferred.

Physical Requirements:

• Prolonged periods of at a desk and working on a computer.
• Must be able to lift 20 pounds at a time.
• Must be able to traverse various terrains.
