Job Summary:
The Correctional Officer and Jailer will maintain order in a detention or correctional facility.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- None.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Enforces the facilitys rules and regulations.
- Ensures inmates follow regulations and behave in an orderly manner.
- Issues clothing and other authorized items to inmates.
- Counts and accounts for all inmates.
- Escorts inmates who are in transit between the facility and other locations.
- Inspects inmates and their cells for materials not permitted in facility such as weapons or drugs.
- Inspects and keeps records of all visitors to the facility.
- Inspects mail for contraband.
- Settles disputes between inmates.
- Inspects the condition of the facility and its doors, windows, locks, and gates.
- Logs inmate activities; prepares reports of progress, work, and incidents.
- Prepares daily schedules for inmates.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to learn the regulations and procedures for the facility.
- Ability to work and remain calm in a high-pressure environment.
- Ability to remain impartial when interacting with inmates.
- Excellent time management and organizational skills.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite or similar software to prepare reports.
- Ability to safely operate weapons and tools as needed.
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Previous experience preferred; on-the-job training required.
Physical Requirements:
- Prolonged periods of standing and walking.
- Physically able to detain an inmate if needed.
- Must be able to lift 50 pounds at a time.
