Job Summary:
The Fire Inspector will evaluate new and existing buildings to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal fire and safety codes.
Supervisory Responsibilities:

Duties/Responsibilities:
- Inspects and evaluates new and existing buildings; prepares reports of findings.
- Provides consultation and guidance during planning phases of construction to ensure structures meet fire and safety codes.
- Issues violations, identifying and suggesting resolutions for noted issues; revisits previously inspected locations to ensure corrections have been made.
- Conducts investigations in areas where flammable or explosive materials may be present.
- Conducts investigations of fires and suspected arson in collaboration with other fire and safety staff.
- Performs safety audits and inspections at specified venues in preparation for major events.
- Inspects systems and protocols for special events and other circumstances involving flammable or combustible materials.
- Develops or assists with development of evacuation and fire safety plans as required.
- Condemns unsafe buildings.
- Drafts and delivers reports assessing fire incidents and their handling.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Thorough understanding of fire and safety codes and ordinances, construction principles, and common alarm systems.
- Thorough understanding of how fires begin and spread and ways to prevent, suppress, and fight fires.
- Thorough understanding of relevant equipment, tools, policies, procedures, and strategies used in firefighting.
- Ability to remain calm and exercise good judgement in the midst of hazardous fire-suppression activity.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
- Detail-oriented and organized.
- Excellent interpersonal skills as needed to effectively deal with the public.
Education and Experience:
- Associates degree in a related discipline required.
- At least three years of related experience required.
- Successful completion of fire inspection training required.
- Certification as Uniform Fire Code Inspector preferred.
Physical Requirements:
- Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds at a time.
- Exposure to fire and smoke, and dangerous chemicals and poisonous gases.
