Job Summary:
The Petroleum Geologist will identify the location of oil and gas deposits by studying rock formations, mineral samples, and other areas on land and under water and will recommend safe and efficient means to extract deposits.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- May oversee field crew as needed to conduct geophysical field tests and drill exploratory wells.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Analyzes and interprets aerial photographs and geophysical data to create maps that identify potential oil or gas deposits.
- Conducts field studies to discover and confirm location of oil and gas deposits using ground-based sonar, geochemical analysis, or satellite mapping.
- Uses geophysical data to calculate oil and gas reserves in prospective areas.
- Meets with petroleum engineers to determine the best drilling and production methods to be used.
- Performs other related duties as needed.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Extensive knowledge of geology and other geosciences
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Proficient with geographic information systems (GIS) and global positioning system (GPS) software and equipment.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Excellent management and interpersonal skills
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
Education and Experience:
- Bachelors degree in Geology, Geophysics, or similar field required, Masters degree in Geology, Geophysics, or similar field strongly preferred.
- Five years of related experience required.
- Certification for Petroleum Geology (CPG) preferred.
Physical Requirements:
- Physically able to travel to field sites and traverse large areas by foot.
- Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Must be able to lift 25 pounds at a time to carry and handle field equipment.
