Job Summary:
The Geoscientist will study physical aspects of the earths surface such as composition and structure to support and make recommendations and predictions on topics such as the location or movement of various geological elements.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- None.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Studies geological and geophysical data collected from various sources to estimate the location of potential mineral ore deposits, natural gas deposits, oil deposits, and underground water sources.
- Conducts field studies to collect samples and data for further study.
- Collects and examines soils, minerals, rocks, or fossil remains.
- Studies the composition, structure, and history of the earths crust.
- Analyzes geological data using laboratory techniques and computer software.
- Produces geological maps and charts based on field studies and laboratory findings.
- Provides geological information for use in land development projects.
- Prepares technical reports explaining research results.
- Evaluates water movement to inform and support environmental protection and restoration plans and recommendations; covered subjects may include restoration of contaminated sites and waste management.
- Uses geological equipment to study gravity and magnetic fields and their impact on the earth.
- Maintains current knowledge of developments and emerging research in the field of geosciences.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Extensive knowledge of geosciences.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Proficient with geographic information systems (GIS) and global positioning system (GPS) software and equipment.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work with a team.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
Education and Experience:
- Bachelors degree in Geology or related geosciences field required. Masters degree preferred.
- Two years of related field experience required.
Physical Requirements:
- Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at a time.
