Job Summary:
The Senior Building Inspector will inspect new construction and repair or renovations to existing construction of buildings and structures, and oversee the issuance of building permits.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- May hire, train, and oversee subordinate building inspectors.
- May oversee the scheduling, assignments, and daily workflow of subordinate staff in the department.
- Provides constructive and timely performance evaluations.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Inspects new construction and repairs or renovations to existing construction of buildings and structures for compliance with building codes and regulations.
- Issues building, plumbing, electrical, and other permits for building projects.
- Evaluates construction plans and materials to be used in construction projects.
- Notifies builders and architects of variances and instances where plans or constructions are out of compliance with codes or regulations; provides general guidance and information on resolution.
- Follows up to ensure that violations are corrected in accordance with codes and regulations.
- Drafts and distributes reports of inspection findings; maintains records of reports and findings.
- Oversees the collection of building fines and fees.
- Confirms that land usage and construction projects comply with zoning, health, and safety regulations.
- Maintains knowledge of zoning, health, safety, and building codes and regulations.
- Performs other duties as required.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Extensive knowledge of construction, engineering, and building codes and regulations.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to write clear inspection reports on the condition of properties.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent required; Bachelors degree in Architecture, Construction, or related field desirable.
- Building inspector certification preferred.
- Five years of related experience required.
Physical Requirements:
- Must be physically able to inspect construction sites including walking properties, climbing ladders, and kneeling.
- Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds at a time.
