Critical Labor Coalition (CLC) Apprenticeship Panel
The House Committee on Small Business hosted a panel discussion for committee and member office staff to discuss apprenticeships as valuable tools for learning and development. Steven Perrotta represented SHRM along with other CLC members, the National Restaurant Association (NRA), and the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC). SHRM collaborates with coalitions like CLC to expand its influence on critical workforce issues. The panel informed staff about how industry and sector leaders are using these opportunities to address the growing skills gap. Panelists also shared concerns about the barriers small and medium-sized businesses face in accessing these programs, which discourage them from pursuing a registered program with the Department of Labor.
Apprenticeships are a strategic solution for the workforce that close skills gaps, strengthen talent pipelines, and support organizational growth. SHRM champions expanding apprenticeship programs across various industries, highlighting their ability to offer hands-on learning, industry-recognized credentials, and career advancement opportunities. We also encourage employers to work with educational institutions and government agencies to create inclusive, flexible apprenticeship models. By integrating apprenticeships into talent strategies, organizations can foster innovation, boost retention, and develop a more adaptable workforce. SHRM remains dedicated to promoting best practices and policies to support the expansion of apprenticeships.
