Lucas Confirmed for Another Term on the EEOC
On July 31, the Senate confirmed Andrea Lucas, acting chair of the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), to a second five-year term in a 52–45 vote.
Despite her confirmation, the EEOC remains without a quorum, and as a result, it is limited in its ability to issue new regulations or take formal enforcement actions. The Senate must still vote on whether to confirm Brittany Panuccio, who was nominated to fill current U.S. Deputy Secretary of Labor Keith Sonderling’s former seat on the EEOC. If Panuccio is confirmed, the commission is expected to act quickly on several priorities, including revisions to enforcement guidance and regulations under the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act — areas where Lucas has voiced concern about perceived overreach.
