SHRM Supports CEO Commission’s Hill Day on Disability Employment
The CEO Commission for Disability Employment brought business leaders to Washington, D.C., for its 2025 Employment Summit and Hill Day on Sept. 2-3, part of its efforts to advance bipartisan legislation that strengthens employment of people with disabilities. SHRM, which is a founding member of the CEO Commission and is represented on its board of directors, led one of nine teams that spent time on Capitol Hill, meeting with members of Congress and their staff to advance key legislation.
Among the highlights, in two of the SHRM-led meetings, Rep. Sharice Davids, D-Kan., (second from right, next to SHRM’s Jack Shanahan) and the office of Sen. Chris Van Hollen, D-Md., pledged to work with SHRM and the CEO Commission to identify and secure additional co-sponsors for legislation.
The policy agenda for the CEO Commission focused on three bills. The SSI Savings Penalty Elimination Act (S. 1234/H.R. 2540) would modernize Supplemental Security Income by raising outdated asset limits, allowing individuals to save more for the future while retaining vital benefits. The ABLE Employment Flexibility Act (S. 4911/H.R. 4644) would allow employers to make tax-exempt contributions to ABLE savings accounts in lieu of traditional retirement plan contributions, strengthening financial independence without jeopardizing benefits. The Transformation to Competitive Integrated Employment Act (S. 2438/H.R. 4771) would support employers in phasing out subminimum wage jobs and expanding competitive, integrated employment opportunities for individuals with disabilities.
