Apprenticeship as a Workforce Talent Strategy

Nearly 70 percent of organizations still struggle to fill full-time roles, according to SHRM research. Clay Lord, Senior Program Director for the SHRM Foundation, and Jennifer Carlson, CEO of Apprenti, discuss how apprenticeships can mitigate talent shortages, provide substantial benefits and ROI for employers, and how intermediaries ease the administrative burden on employers.

    Jennifer Carlson

    Jennifer Carlson serves as Chief Executive Officer of Apprenti. Apprenti is a non-profit, apprenticeship intermediary and workforce consulting organization that delivers a secondary pipeline of tech talent to address U.S. domestic digital skills shortages. A former business leader with AIG, Progressive and adjunct professor at Seattle University, Carlson also serves on the Tech Councils of North America (TECNA) foundation board and as an Advisory Board Member for Apprenticeships for America.

    Clayton Lord

    Clayton Lord (Clay, he/him) is the Senior Program Director for the SHRM Foundation, the 501(c)3 philanthropic arm of SHRM, which focuses on widening pathways to work and helping every worker thrive by empowering HR leaders to be forces for social good. In that role, he oversees strategy, planning, program delivery, and program evaluation. He is a social impact executive with expertise in nurturing and evaluating complex initiatives that drive systemic change and expand access and opportunity for all. He lives with his husband and daughter in Maryland.
