Allyship is a verb—and it needs a refresh. Host Monique Akanbi sits down with Victoria Mattingly, founder and CEO of Mattingly Solutions, and Sertrice Shipley, founder & CEO of Plan to Action LLC, about how HR teams can evolve their allyship practices from symbolic gestures to meaningful, proactive advocacy. They explore common misconceptions, the dynamics of ally/partner relationships, and actionable strategies for HR professionals.
CEO & Founder, Mattingly Solutions
Victoria Mattingly, PhD (Dr. V) is founder and CEO of Mattingly Solutions, a workplace inclusion consulting firm. Her life mission is to use organizational science to improve the human experience at work, especially for underrepresented and historically excluded groups.
Dr. V is a published author, an academic researcher, has taught in business schools globally, and is an esteemed speaker thought leader in the diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) field.
She earned her PhD in Industrial-Organizational (I-O) Psychology from Colorado State University, specializing in the science of workplace behavior change interventions. As an organizational psychologist, she turns otherwise abstract concepts like inclusion and allyship into quantifiable metrics.
Dr. V founded Mattingly Solutions in August 2019 on the belief that DEI training alone is never enough to make a real impact on DEI outcomes. DEI done right is embedded in the fabric of a company’s culture, its overall strategy, and considered in every business decision—at all levels of the organization.
Before starting Mattingly Solutions, Dr. V worked as and DEI and L&D external consultant at DDI and Mind Gym, building products that are still being sold and implemented to this day. She also worked on Amazon’s talent assessment team, building innovative training solutions for more inclusive hiring programs, with an emphasis on fair hiring practices and candidate experiences.
CEO & Founder, Plan to Action LLC
Sertrice Shipley is the CEO & founder of Plan to Action, a DEI consulting firm. She is also the co-author of Inclusalytics: How Diversity Equity and Inclusion Leaders Use Data to Drive Their Work. Prior to leading Plan to Action, she made significant contributions as Co-Owner & Chief Consulting Officer of Mattingly Solutions. Her dynamic consulting has benefited clients like the National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO), Koppers, and American Humane, delivering comprehensive DEI solutions ranging from executive advising to behavioral change strategies. Beyond her professional endeavors, Sertrice is deeply committed to community service. She holds prestigious positions such as Chair of the board for Blacks in I/O, serves on the Board of Directors for the Lucy Daniels Center, and the Board of Advisors for GoBe Kids. Additionally, she contributes her time and insights to national organizations like the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology and Alpha Sigma Alpha Sorority. A respected DEI thought leader and public speaker, Sertrice has been invited to speak at prominent events like the Society for Human Resource Management, the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology, and various city Chamber events across the United States. Residing in Raleigh, North Carolina with her husband Abraham and their dog Winston, Sertrice continues her mission through Plan to Action, leveraging her deep-rooted knowledge and commitment to foster inclusive workplace cultures and drive meaningful change in DEI implementation.
HR professionals can use their influence to promote inclusion and diversity through simple, informal acts inside and outside their organization.
