5 Tips for Women in Leadership from Glennon Doyle's New Book
Check out these five tips for women in leadership from Glennon Doyle’s new book, and then join Glennon virtually on November 9-12.
1. Find What Makes You Come Alive
In Untamed, Doyle writes about finding what you love and what makes you come alive as critical to living your own life. Finding fulfillment in your daily life is a huge factor in your overall health and success. Setting your own goals based on your interests is much more rewarding than following someone else’s plan for you. By focusing more on our own passions, we grow and expand in areas that make us unique.
2. Find Your Inner Voice
Linkage’s research on women leaders has found that women in the workplace often face hurdles to advancement, including the “Inner Critic” —the critical voice in our head that can hold us back from realizing our full potential. Glennon writes about her own Inner Voice, and for her, that Inner Voice can be supportive, instructive, and intuitive. That positive inner voice can be elusive to find, but as Doyle writes, it can be immeasurably helpful — and it can help us overpower the “Inner Critic”. She also mentions not letting outside influences change us, which is key for women in leadership positions. By listening to our inner voice, we can make better decisions in both business and our personal lives.
3. Turn Your Weakness into a Superpower
Doyle talks about her daughter’s sensitivity being her superpower. While many people share this quality, it’s often looked down upon. There are many so-called negative personality traits that can be turned into your superpower. Use bossiness, impatience, or sensitivity to better lead and manage your team. Approaching a situation with your genuine self helps lead you to resolutions that reflect your honest personality. It’s not your job to change how others perceive you; It is your job to live your true self, authentically.
4. Courage Leads to New Opportunities
Much of Untamed deals with changes in Doyle’s life that wouldn’t have been possible without courageous decision making. Many of us—Doyle included—have been taught to mistrust our courage. Pushing ourselves to make tough decisions lead to opportunities that wouldn’t have been possible without a bit of discomfort. Next time you’re presented with a new opportunity that seems daunting or stressful, consider the positive outcomes that could come from it.
5. Don’t Lose Who You Already Are
Glennon highlights how we’re often influenced by things like social media, which then changes how we think we’re “supposed to be”. Instead of being who we are, we try and adapt to other people’s expectations. As women in leadership, it’s important to stay true to yourself, how you got here, and where you’re going next. Every now and then, it’s a good idea to unplug from social media and reset expectations for ourselves.
Untamed by Glennon Doyle contains words of wisdom not just for fans of her writing, but for women in leadership positions. Using Glennon’s life approach in business situations can completely change how we view ourselves and those we work with. We’re very excited to have her speak at the 2020 Virtual Women in Leadership Institute and we hope to see you there. Download our brochure and register today!
