Housing, Transportation Choices for SHRM22

A red and yellow trolley car on a city street.

SHRM has reserved a block of housing at New Orleans hotels with reduced rates for attendees of the SHRM Annual Conference & Expo 2022, all located a short distance from the convention center. Secure the best available rates by booking directly through MCI, SHRM's official housing partner.

Transportation Options

There are several options for traveling into the city for SHRM22:

  • Bus. Greyhound stops at the New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal located in the center of New Orleans.
  • Train. Amtrak offers daily service to New Orleans on the City of New Orleans, which originates in Chicago, and the Crescent, from New York City. The Sunset Limited leaves from Los Angeles three days a week.
  • Plane. The Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport is 16 miles from downtown.
There are also several options for getting to or from the airport once you arrive:
  • Shuttle. Cost: $24 one way, $44 round trip. Vans depart about every 30 minutes, except between 2 a.m. and 3:30 a.m., from outside the baggage area.
  • Taxis. Cost: about $36 from the airport to the city center for one or two people or $15 per passenger for three or more passengers. Head to the airport's lower level, outside of the baggage claim area, to access taxis.
  • Uber, Lyft airport pickups. Cost: Prices start at $33 depending on vehicle. Head to the bottom level of the airport parking lot across the street from baggage claim to meet your driver.

Getting Around the City

  • Streetcars. Tennessee Williams immortalized New Orleans streetcars in his play "A Streetcar Named Desire," but that particular streetcar line no longer exists. There are other lines, though, that offer a scenic way to see the city. They include the Riverfront, St. Charles, Canal and Rampart St./St. Claude lines.
The Riverfront streetcar runs along the Mississippi River from the Ernest N. Marial Convention Center to the historic French Market, an open-air flea market on Governor Nicholls and Barracks streets. Also along this route are the aquarium, restaurants, shops and the famous Café DuMonde. The café is renowned for its beignets ($3 for a plate of three hot, powdered doughnuts), and its iced café au lait is a welcome treat on a sweltering June day.

Be aware that the dark green St. Charles streetcar is the only one that is not air-conditioned. And there are two Canal routes: Both originate at the back of the French Quarter. One ends at the Cemeteries Transit Terminal, the other at the New Orleans Museum of Art in City Park. Check to make sure you're getting on the one you need.

Cost: $1.25 per ride for all routes and 25 cents to transfer from one streetcar to another. Bring quarters, or purchase the $3 Jazzy Pass for unlimited rides on any line for one day.

  • Pedicabs. This is an option for short distances that can transport a maximum of two people. Pedicabs operate mostly along the Canal Street downtown corridor and in the French Quarter, Garden District and Faubourg Marigny neighborhoods. Marigny is known for its Cajun bistros, bohemian bars and jazz clubs, many located along Frenchmen Street.

Cost: $5 for the first six blocks and $1 per block per person after that, but prices are subject to change. The open-air cabs have retractable canvas roofs. They generally operate from the early morning until midnight on weekdays and later on weekend nights. You can hail one on the street or by calling a dispatch number.
