Florida Relaxes Work Restrictions for Older Teens (7/1/24)


The Florida Legislature just passed a bill to loosen existing work restrictions for minors who are at least 16 years old. Governor DeSantis signed the bill on March 22, and it will take effect on July 1. You should note that both federal and state laws restrict the time of day and number of hours that minors can work, the type of work that minors can perform, and the equipment they can use.

An employer who requires, schedules, or otherwise causes a minor to be employed in violation of the Bill is exposed to statutory penalties not to exceed $2,500 per offense.  Each day during which any violation continues shall constitute a separate and distinct offense, and the employment of any minor in violation of the law shall, with respect to each minor so employed, constitute a separate and distinct offense.

The law will go into effect on July 1, allowing Florida minors older than 16 to work more than 30 hours per week if a parent, guardian or school superintendent gives their permission in a waiver. Teens of those same ages could work more than eight hours on weekends and holidays.
