Job Summary:
The Director of Public Affairs will lead and manage the Public Affairs Department to maintain and improve the relationship between the organization and the public it serves.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- Oversees the day-to-day workflow of the department.
- Conducts performance evaluations that are timely and constructive.
- Handles discipline and termination of employees as needed and in accordance with company policy.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Develops and implements comprehensive programs to publicize the organization and its interests.
- Promotes communication in the company and with similar institutions.
- Develops and maintains strong relationships with the media.
- Acts as the public spokesperson for the organization.
- Responds to press and media inquiries.
- Collaborates with executives to advise and counsel them on public relations techniques, publicity programs, demographic trends, and potential problems and opportunities.
- Supervises the work of staff writers for news releases, speeches, and other projects.
- Assigns and delegates public affairs assignments.
- Acts as the organizations representative in civic programs, professional meetings, conferences, and other community activities.
- Creates, implements, and manages a departmental budget.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills with a thorough understanding of effective public relations techniques.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to prioritize tasks and to delegate tasks when appropriate.
- Ability to work well under pressure and tight deadlines.
- Ability to create and implement a budget.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
Education and Experience:
- Bachelors degree in Journalism, Public Relations, or related field required; Masters Degree preferred.
- Three to five years of related public relations and/or journalism experience required.
Physical Requirements:
- Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
- Must be able to travel to various locations.
