Job Summary:
The Pharmacy Technician Supervisor will oversee the IV Pharmacy Technicians and Pharmacy Technicians.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- Oversees the daily workflow of the department.
- Prepares the daily work schedule for technicians.
- Prepares written performance evaluations of pharmacy technicians and submits to the director for approval. Reviews performance evaluations with employees within a prescribed time period. Addresses and documents areas requiring correction in technicians' behavior or performance and refers potential disciplinary problems to the director.
- Determines priorities and assigns and regulates the routine work production performed by technicians.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Serves as a communication liaison with the director of pharmacy, staff pharmacists, and technicians.
- Devises and administers the technician test for new applicants, and study programs and tests for technicians currently employed. Participates with the director in the interviewing and selection of applicants for technician positions.
- Coordinates the orientation and training of new employees to the technical functions of the assigned areas. Develops a training manual for pharmacy technicians and IV technicians and updates as necessary. Coordinates in-service education activities of technical staff.
- Develops task analysis evaluations. Distributes and reviews expectations with technicians to ensure that they are aware of standards to be achieved.
- Formulates draft policies and procedures governing technician duties and submits to the director for approval. In-services approved policies to ensure technician compliance.
- Addresses pharmacy topics at nursing and ward clerk orientations.
- Conducts staff meetings routinely with technicians.
- Participates in problem-solving and troubleshooting activities involving technicians and other intradepartmental and interdepartmental staff.
- Participates in quality-assurance activities of the department. Responsible for maintaining and performing the highest achievable level of technical competence and work performance.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Ability to be committed to the observation of aseptic techniques in handling sterile products and equipment, and the maintenance of a stringently clean work area at all times.
- Effective leadership, communication, and training skills.
Education and Experience:
- High school graduate or equivalent.
- At least two years of hospital pharmacy experience including involvement with unit-dose, and IV admixture preparation, TPN, and chemotherapy services.
- Must successfully complete in-hospital IV technician training program.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to perform light lifting (up to 15 pounds) and repetitious physical activity.
- Ability to stand for long periods of time.
