Respiratory Therapy Technician




Job Summary:

Under the supervision of a licensed physician, the Respiratory Therapy Technician will perform pulmonary function testing for diagnosis and measurement of lung capacity and respiratory therapy to treat diseases such as emphysema, chronic bronchitis, asthma, cystic fibrosis, and pneumonia.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • None.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Explains test procedures to patients and performs pulmonary function tests, lung capacity tests, and arterial blood analyses.
  • Records and interprets results.
  • Performs stress tests and other studies of the cardiopulmonary system.
  • Studies disorders of patients with disruptive sleep patterns.
  • Performs ultrasonic nebulizer and incentive spirometer treatments.
  • Sets up, maintains, and monitors mechanical breathing apparatus-respirators.
  • Responds to all codes as a member of the CPR team, assists with intubation, and administers oxygen.
  • Teaches patients to perform breathing exercises and uses intermittent positive pressure breathing therapy machines.
  • Administers aerosolized cardiopulmonary drugs including bronchodilators, musolytics, and antibiotics.
  • Cleans, repairs, sterilizes, and maintains equipment such as ventilators, flowmeters, nebulizers, and oxygen tents.
  • Follows all safety rules applying to gas cylinders, ventilators, and all electrical equipment

Required Skills/Abilities:

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Successful completion of an approved respiratory therapy education program required.
  • Must be certified as a certified respiratory technician (CRT) by the National Board of Respiratory Care within 18 months of employment.

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Prolonged periods of standing, bending, and reaching.
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
