Paid Leave for School Visitation Policy

Editor's  Note: A handful of states mandate time off for parents and guardians to attend school activities, so be sure to check the laws in the states employees are working before implementing a policy.

Objective
[Company Name] recognizes that it benefits the parent, the children and the community when a parent or guardian is able to take time off from work to attend functions and meetings related to an employee's children's education. Therefore, the company allows employees to take leave from work for this purpose as described below.

Eligibility

Regular full and part-time employees who are parents or guardians [add other categories if needed, such as grandparents, stepparents, etc.] of a child aged 18 or under, attending a licensed day care facility or public or private school through grade twelve.

Procedures
Company employees are entitled to use up to [insert number of hours or days] of paid leave per calendar year to attend school functions, meet with school teachers and administration, or assist in the child's classroom.

When possible, an employee is expected to notify the immediate supervisor at least one week before the leave is needed. When it is not possible to notify the supervisor one week in advance of the need for leave, the employee must notify the supervisor as soon as possible.

[Company Name] reserves the right to deny leave due to business needs, except where required by law.
