HR Professionals Can Now Earn California Micro-Credential

SHRM designation verifies HR expertise in state's complex employment laws

HR professionals who practice in California, work for an organization that has operations in California or serve clients who do business in California have a new opportunity to demonstrate their mastery of that state's unique legislative and regulatory landscape. In late February, the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) introduced its California Employment Law Micro-Credential, which is designed to recognize an HR practitioner's state-specific expertise.

SHRM-Micro-Credential_CA-Employ-Law.png"Workplace laws in California can be very complex and require HR professionals to have a more in-depth understanding of employment law," said Nick Schacht, SHRM-SCP, chief global development officer for SHRM. "SHRM is committed to helping HR professionals around the world develop the skills and competencies necessary to succeed in their roles. We've built our California Employment Law Micro-Credential expressly to support the professional development of that state's HR community."

A list of the inaugural recipients of the micro-credential is available on the SHRM Northern California website.

To earn the new micro-credential, candidates must do the following:

  • Purchase the SHRM California Employment Law Micro-Credential package, which includes:
    1. Enrollment in the SHRM seminar California HR: Apply California Law to Employment Practices.
    2. Four comprehensive SHRM e-Learning Library courses on California-specific topics: wage and hour laws; leaves of absence; benefits; and privacy, security, health and safety.
  • Pass a 51-question California knowledge assessment.

Candidates are not required to hold a SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP certification to be eligible for this micro-credential. Current SHRM certificants who successfully obtain the California micro-credential will be awarded professional development credits (PDCs) toward recertification of their SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP.
